On October 30, 2009, in concert with Haley House, Inc., I launched a special event for vegans who eat, live, work and/play in Roxbury, a neighborhood of Boston, MA.
Some background info~ Haley House is a 40+year -old non-profit -read all about HH at http://www.haleyhouse.org/about.html (note must learn how to post live links, asap). Four years ago HH opened a bakery-cafe in Dudley Square, which to me is the heart of Roxbury. I started connecting with them soon after they opened, either by sending catering jobs their way that I couldn’t do or sharing jobs with them. HH staff has been very serious about deepening our connection from the beginning. Last year I sent a query re: could I rent the cafe on a Sunday to launch a vegan brunch. We’ve been working on building a stronger, closer relationship since and in late August we decided to launch a vegan night at HH. I was able to negotiate Fridays and HH offered to join me in crafting and nurturing a vegan audience for a 3-course meal of my choice.
First menu ~ SistahZa’s Smokin’ Vegan Sliders- made with br.rice;oats; portabellos -the vegan’s steak and a kazillion seasonings- topped with Golden Girl’s BBQ Sauce-toasted sesame oil, plenty of onions, v-sweetening;mustard and a little oil, Entree~Caribbean Magic-br. rice married to a pot of black beans; sweet plaintains roasted in a lime vinaigrette; my hand -made v-chorizo; HH hand-made mango salsa. Dessert- Hollah (for more) Vegan Chocolate Cake with Fudgey Frosting.
The next two days, Oct. 31 and Nov. 01 we spent working the hungry hoards at the biggest veg fest in New England, Boston Veg Fest. We sampled/sold V-Sliders and our Hollah Cake. Residual Bounce: 5 catering job inquiries; 1 confirmed at a local university! Yeah, Baby! Vegan. In Roxbury! Against All Odds could be the tag line, right?
My first post, sans photos, I know, I know. More Will Be Revealed. Peace & Love, SistahZa
